June 19th, 2008 - New web server!

Yes, due to numerous issues with my last web server, I've moved martinlivings.com across to a new one. There shouldn't be any issues, but if emails are bouncing or the like, please be patient as everything settles down.

If any web pages aren't looking right, please let me know.

April 8th, 2007 - Carnies wins Tin Duck!

At last night's Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation (or Tin Duck) awards, held at the All Seasons hotel in Northbridge, my novel Carnies picked up the award for Best WA Professional Long Written Work, narrowly pipping such luminaries in the field as Stephen Dedman, Lee Battersby, Laney Cairo and KA Bedford.

I'm incredibly proud and humbled that Carnies is being read and enjoyed by enough people to win this award. It's the best welcome home I could have imagined.

(additionally, my short story "Dwar7es" came runner-up in the Best WA Professional Short Written Work!)

March 21st, 2007 - Martin Livings taking part in AHWA's 2007 Mentor Program

The Australian Horror Writer's Association has announced that it's running a mentor program this year, to encourage newer writers to develop professionally with the help of some local industry luminaries. It's only available for members of the AHWA, and thus the details are behind the username-and-password section of their site, but the basic details are available here:

http://ozhorrorscope.blogspot.com/2007/03/news-ahwa-mentor-program.html

I'm incredibly proud and honoured to have been asked to be one of the mentors in this inaugural program, and I can't wait to pick my mentoree!

May 1st, 2006 - Carnies available for pre-order online

For anyone particularly enthusiastic, Carnies is now starting to show up on most major Australian booksellers' websites. You can pre-order it there, by the looks of things. See:

April 6th, 2006 - Cover for Carnies released!

I'm pleased to say that the cover for my forthcoming novel, Carnies, has now been created. The designer's name is Ron Hampton, who did the covers for all four of the Lothian Books "Dark Suspense" series of books. I can't wait to see what he did with the other three!

Click the thumbnail on the left to see a larger version of the cover.

January 19, 2006 - Carnies, my first novel, to be published in June 2006!

I just received word from Lothian Books, recently bought by Time Warner Books Australia, that my first novel, Carnies, has been accepted for publication in their new "Dark Suspense" series of adult horror novels. It should be out around June this year.

This is huge news, and a massive first step down the path of writing more novels. I'll be spending 2006 in the UK writing a followup to Carnies, currently tentatively titled Wolf Mother, so having Carnies picked up is simply amazing!

Watch me walking on clouds for a long time to come!

November 17, 2005 - Shadow Box released!

Shadow Box is now out, and let me tell you, this is one creepy, stylish, original collection. And for only three dollars for the email version, or five dollars for it on a CD, it's phenomenal value. Seventy stories, three dollars.. that's just over four cents a story, not counting the artwork and soundscapes.

Buy this collection. It deserves all the attention it can muster. And not just because a story of mine is in it!

October 18, 2005 - Martin gets an Arts Grant!!!

Yesterday, I received a letter notifying me that I'd been successful in my application for a Literature Grant from the Australia Council. Apparently I'm an Emerging Writer, and I'm worthy of a decent sized grant, to help fund my living in the UK next year, writing a novel.

This is very cool and humbling, and also incredibly gratifying; it really validates my work, that I can stand up to other applicants, not just in the genre, but across the whole field of literature. I don't know what the board saw in my application, but I'm going to work my guts out next year to prove I was worth it!

The media release should be available here soon:

July 25th, 2005 - One Acceptance, One Highly Commended Notice

Two bits of good news. Firstly, my story "Deadline" received a Highly Commended Notice in the Katherine Susannah Prichard Science Fiction/Fantasy Awards.

Secondly, my story "Playtime" has been accepted into the upcoming Shadow Box e-anthology. This is looking brilliant, very short dark flash fiction, with a good list of contributors, including more than a few friends. Keep your eyes peeled for this one, it's due out at Halloween.

July 10th, 2005 - "Running" mentioned in Sydney Morning Herald review of Daikaiju

In Saturday's Sydney Morning Herald, Van Ikin reviewed the anthology Daikaiju, and in the review he actually mentioned my story, "Running". Not that he said if he liked it or not, or actually mention my name, but nonetheless, it's a mention by the esteemed Professor Ikin, an icon (pardon the pun) in Australian SF, and I'll cherish it regardless.

Click the image below for the full version, with the important part highlighted!

June 24th, 2005 - Story in new issue of Shadowed Realms!

Read "In Nomine Patris" (and many other fine stories, I'm sure) here!

June 19th, 2005 - Story and award nomination in Antipodean SF!

It's been an exciting day for me... firstly, my flash story, Helldesk, is now up at Antipodean SF. Go HERE to read it, then VOTE for me. If you like the story, that is!

Secondly, and just as excitingly, my story from issue 67, Know-It-All, has mysteriously been shortlisted for the AntiSF Awards for 2004. This should be announced at the Antipodean SF website sometime, and be reprinted there. Fingers crossed!

June 2nd, 2005 - New story and non-fiction added to bibliography!

It appears that the old adage of "once bitten, twice shy" doesn't apply to the Shadowed Realms luminaries, who've been silly enough to buy another one of my stories for their fine online publication. It should be out in a week or two.

Additionally, I've updated my BIBLIOGRAPHY to include most of my non-fiction articles over the years. I'm missing a couple of reviews I did for PC Games Plus, but once I manage to dig them up, I'll add them too.

May 31st, 2005 - Story samples now online!

Yes, I've rearranged my BIBLIOGRAPHY, and included samples of each story. I hope you enjoy them, and that it somehow inspires you to go out and buy the publications the stories appear in, so you can read the whole things!

May 16th, 2005 - martinlivings.com is launched!

Yes, I've finally gone and gotten myself an actual honest-to-goodness domain name. Gosh, how professional! So from now on, my site will be accessible from:

http://www.martinlivings.com

Likewise, my email address will now be:

me@martinlivings.com

I think it's about time I've done this. My writing seems to be taking off currently, and I think a more professional site is probably a good idea at this point. Plus, of course, I'll be going to the UK next year, and will need somewhere to have my site which isn't tied to my ISP. And Geocities just doesn't cut it!

Big thanks to MD Web Hosting Australia, who I pretty much picked at random for having a reasonable balance of price and features for my need (there are millions of these guys out there!), and thus far are looking like exactly what I want!

I hope you like the new layout... not that much different in essence to the old one, really, but a totally different look and feel. I like it, anyway, so nyah.

May 11th, 2005 - New exciting project for Martin!

Image hosted by TinyPic.com I've been asked to participate in a new project put together by Shane Jiraiya Cummings and Angela Challis, of Shadowed Realms fame. Fading Twilight will be a four-novella collection by four authors, Shane, Lee and Lyn Battersby, and myself, and (probably brutally) edited by Angela. See left and right for mockups for the front and back covers. Bigger versions are viewable by clicking the images.

I've never been invited to participate in a closed collection before, so it's simultaneously flattering and terrifying. What if I can't think of a novella for it? Still, I'll give it my best, of course. I mean, hey, it's only due by the end of July. Plenty of time to think up and write a brilliant, dark, Western Australian-centric novella.

Eek!

April 15th, 2005 - Interviews with Martin are online!

I have a couple of semi-serious interviews online at the moment. Well, actually, I have heaps of them, thanks to a recent LiveJournal craze, but there are also some more formal ones.

Firstly, at the Daikaiju site, I was asked some questions, and the answers are online. GO HERE to here to see my insightful and intelligent responses.

Secondly, Ben Peek is running an Interview Week on his LiveJournal, allowing us self-promoting egomaniacs to "pimp our sh*t", in his own words. Lots of great interviews there, I highly recommend reading them all, but if you just wanna see mine, IT'S RIGHT HERE.

And, if you're left wanting more of the wit and wisdom of Martin Livings, I have a pile more interviews online RIGHT HERE. Enjoy!

EDIT - 11-5-05 - the interviews are all now on the Tabula Rasa website. Mine is HERE, and the rest are HERE.

April 7th, 2005 - The web site is moving!

Yes, after many years sitting happily on iiNet's servers, my website is moving over to Geocities. Now, some might think this is a step backwards, and frankly, they'd be right. But at the end of the year, I'm going to be quitting iiNet and moving to England for a year, so I figured I might as well move my website now and save the hassle. This way, anyone still visiting the old address will be redirected to the new for the next nine months or so.

The new address is:

http://www.geocities.com/thatsforme2002/

Also, I'll slowly be changing my email address over to Gmail. So my email address henceforth will be:

mlivings@gmail.com

I see a whole new period of my life coming up, and nine months really isn't a long time when you have so much to organise. It's like having a baby. Only slightly less painful.

March 31st, 2005 - Lots of stuff out!

First news update in a loooooooooooooooong time, but I thought I'd mention that I had four publications launches at Swancon 30 last week. I had stories in "Daikaiju", "Mitch? 4", "Borderlands issue 5" and "Ticonderoga Online", all launched in quick succession. Every one is an excellent publication (of course!), and you should all go out and buy them immediately. My BIBLIOGRAPHY has been updated accordingly, along with the change in title of another anthology I'm appearing in this year.

If you want really up-to-date news, a better place than this to check is my Live Journal. Though you'll also find a lot of rather silly stuff there. Please ignore my allegations about Lee Battersby. ;)
